Mufti Day

Last Friday we had a mufti day to raise money for the Philippines. I dressed up as an elf. I didn't see any other fairy tale characters there. The school made $350.

Visiting Author

Rebecca Metcalfe came in and read her new book called 'The Girl Who Loves to Sing'. It was about a
little girl who loves singing but a mean boy tells her that  her singing was bad and wants her to stop. So she stopped singing for a whole day. At night her mum came in and told her a story about a little girl when she was four years old and she always made people happy with her singing. That made her start singing again and not listen to bullies.

Cricket

Yesterday Mr Drummond's son Hamish came to school to teach us about cricket. It was fun. We learned how to bat and bowl. At the end we got to have a bag of fun things. We played a fun game where you had to bat the ball then run to something and someone would get the ball and throw it to Hamish.

The Day it Hailed

This afternoon room 5 were inside and it started to hail so we rushed outside. Ruru, Jacob and I huddled up in a group and jumped for joy!!. The hail felt weird because it was hard and when it touched you it splashed.

Life Education

Today room  5 went to see Harold. We went on a train (we even got tickets that were yellow and blue cool). Here are some things we learnt

  • that the heart goes under left lung that is why it's bigger
  • about the circulatory system
  • that there are about 656 muscles in the human body
  • that the heart leans to the left slightly
At the end we meet Harold and he blew us a big, big kiss.

Golf Lessons

On Wednesday Room 5 had their first golf lesson. The balls were golf balls and tennis balls. The hardest ball to hit was the tennis ball. A few people missed the ball. I found it quite easy and I'm looking forward to our next lesson.

Science in a Van

Yesterday we saw Alan and Emily who taught us about mixtures and how they mix, separate and react. Om tried to mix water and cooking oil but they wouldn't mix. Mareva has a giant dry ice bubble in her hand. It felt cold and slimy.

Nelson Symphony Orchestra

This morning some members of the Nelson Symphony Orchestra came to school to share their mini production. We were surprised to learn that most of the props were upcycled from recycled materials from the transfer station. I learnt that one of the violins were 130 years old. There will be a concert in  Nelson tomorrow.

Milk in Schools

Every day at 1:30 we deliver milk to all the classes in the school. We are really enjoying helping the children fold the boxes and watching everyone enjoy the cold milk. The tetra packs are recycled in to roof tiles and paper in Thailand. Some of the paper is made into books for the Thai children.

Mid Winter Swim

It was lots of fun going to the beach for a swim today. We ran into the water as fast as we could. The hot showers, milo and chocolate fish at the end were so nice. It was sad to see the dead whale on the beach.

Great white Butterfly

We looked in the school garden this morning. To our horror (and excitement) we found some great white butterfly caterpillars. Mrs T phoned the Ministry for Primary Industries hotline (0800 80 99 66) and reported our find. Will and Jo came this afternoon and confirmed that they are these pesky butterflies that arrived in Nelson in 2010. If you find any on your brassicas please phone the hotline number.
